Older Women Dancing
Bonnie Brew
Older Women Dancing was conceived by me as I moved in improvisational dance. Often the movement or gestures from my dance teachers in Balinese dance, hula or the many market sellers in the Philippines where I was a Peace Corps volunteer, popped into these improvisations and clearly stated they did not wish to be ignored any longer. They wished to be seen, as I did. Many of these folks were or are extraordinary dancers, teachers and artists. Many are also my friends. The old sellers in the markets were rambunctious, brash and often bawdy having given into authenticity and spontaneity. Each allowed me to pass into their culture and also helped bring me back into my own. The non-western cultures they came from valued and revered older women. These older women returned that reverence to their clans, banjars, temples and families by continuing to dance late into their lives and teaching. It is with deepest respect that I share with you some of the movement that was passed to me as I bring it into the heart and breath of my own dance.
It is my hope that Older Women Dancing will unfold into a small group of women also wanting to play with improvisation that includes non-western movement.
Older Women Dancing makes available 6-week sessions bringing together women from 50-105 yearning to dance and value their bodies as they age. These women may have little or no dance experience.
Thank you so much for coming.
